Pubic hair removal for surgery: pre-operative tips

October 26, 2023

Pubic hair removal in preparation for surgery is a common practice.

Trichotomy is the removal of hair in preparation for surgery.

It is necessary to:

  • make it easier for the surgeon to access the areas to be operated on;
  • allow for better cleaning and disinfection of areas;
  • prevent hair from falling into the incision;
  • allow gauze and plasters to better adhere to the skin.

Permitted hair removal techniques

There are various tools to remove pubic or other hair before surgery, including:

  •  Razor: a quick and painless tool for use on all areas, but which may cause small lesions on the skin and may cause infections. It is best used no more than 1–2 hours before hospitalisation;
  • Electric shaver: unlike a standard razor, It reduces the risk of skin lesions, but may not allow the area to be adequately shaved;
  • Depilatory cream: obviously does not create lesions, but could cause irritation, allergies or hypersensitivity of the skin.

Patients are usually advised to carry out hair removal on their own, before arriving at the clinic, to ensure they can devote the right amount of time and attention to removing hair from the area to be operated on.

Permanent hair removal solutions

To avoid any discomfort associated with general trichotomy or pubic hair removal for surgery, the most effective solution is to get to the root of the issue once and for all!

In our centres, we offer permanent hair removal guaranteed for life, thanks to a team of expert practitioners who, thanks to their training and experience, are able to assess who can undergo these treatments on a case-by-case basis, providing a comprehensive picture of their situation.

We recommend permanent hair removal before undergoing any kind of surgery (except on the scalp, which is the only area we do not treat, as discussed here) because if it is done afterwards, the time requirements and characteristics of the scars must be respected, which may slow down the final result in terms of total elimination of unwanted hair.
