Lasers and moles: are they compatible?
The short answer is “yes“, but let’s delve a bit deeper.
Permanent hair removal treatments do not harm the skin, unlike traditional hair removal techniques such as depilatory creams or wax (hot or cold):
- depilatory creams rely on a chemical compound that weakens the structure of the hair thanks to calcium hydroxide and thioglycolic acid, two salts derived from sulphur, which attack keratin and weaken the hair until it dissolves;
- waxing involves a brutal tearing process, which can cause skin abrasions and subsequent reddening. Waxing is not recommended for people with fragile capillaries, phlebitis and varicose veins, because thin capillaries may rupture.
Contraindications
As we said in a previous article, there are no real contraindications to permanent hair removal if it is performed by experienced personnel.
Any side effects tend to be temporary and short-lived, disappearing within a few hours, and typically consist of redness and slight irritation.
Alternatives
Why should you look for alternatives? The treatments can be carried out safely in the presence of normal and flat moles: the practitioner will cover the moles with a special white pencil to adequately protect them during the session.
However, before proceeding with treatments, it is important that you consult a dermatologist to understand the exact nature of the moles on your body, then possibly seek alternatives.
Conclusion
A burnt mole from treatment does not typically have serious repercussions, and the practitioners know how to deal with burns and the associated colour change.
As a general principle, moles should be avoided and covered appropriately with white pencil, as mentioned above. Moles mapping by a dermatologist can help you to understand which ones are potentially more dangerous or have specific risk factors.
In general, treatment is not indicated for people who have already suffered from melanoma. On a precautionary basis, these patients should typically not start a course of laser hair removal.
