“Can I undergo permanent hair removal if I have tattoos?”
This is one of the most common questions we are asked by our customers and followers on social media who want to remove unwanted hair permanently but have tattoos.
The answer is yes, but with a few caveats. In this article, we are going to explain how to perform permanent hair removal safely on people with small or large tattoos.
How we carry out permanent hair removal on people with tattoos
According to the Italian National Institute of Health, tattooing “consists of permanently colouring parts of the body, either through the subcutaneous and intradermal introduction or penetration of pigments of different colours, by means of needles or various cutting tools, or through scarification techniques, thereby obtaining indelible figures and designs.” These techniques result in a subcutaneous concentration of pigments, so specific precautions must be taken when carrying out a permanent hair removal treatment in order to avoid burns and damage to the skin, as well as to the tattoo.

When a session is carried out on tattooed epidermis, the epìLate team follows a specific protocol to treat the hair in the presence of a tattoo. This protocol involves the following elements:
- it is necessary to trace the edges of the tattoo with a white pencil, creating an outline approximately 1.5 cm away from the tattoo;
- both the tattoo and the area where the outlines have been drawn should be covered with a white cover;
- the square pulse of the handpiece should always be released at a distance of more than 1.5 cm from the tattoo.
These simple but important precautions prevent the beam of light released by the handpiece from causing burns, damage or the removal of the tattoo itself due to the high concentration of pigments.
